5 Popular Indian Dog Breeds

India is home to many dog breeds but the sad part is we don’t know about every Indian dog breed. Many people tried to write about Indian dog breeds but they’re able to share information about the dogs that are more in population. 

Approximately 35 million stray dogs live in India. 

The saddest part is that we Indians can’t even tell the name of one Indian dog breed. In this article, we’re sharing 5 top Indian dog breeds along with some information about each of them: 

1) Rampur Hound – This dog breed belongs from Rampur region of Northern India. It is also known as a smooth haired sighthound. The male Rampur hounds measure 60–75 cm in height and females measure 55–60 cm in height. They weigh about 60–65 lbs. 

2) Rajapalayam – Rajapalayam is an Indian Sighthound. It’s also known as Poligar hound. It’s a large dog and usually measures 25-30 inches at the withers. It was primarily kept for hunting wild boar. 

3) Chippiparai – This Sighthound breed of dogs belongs to the south of India. It was bred as a symbol of royalty and dignity in Madurai rulers. A medium size dog measures approx. 63.5cm at the withers. 

4) Kombai – Kombai is a kind of terrier dog breed found in Kerala as well as Tamil Nadu. They’re extremely intelligent, loyal, and powerful. Male Kombai is around 23-25 inches tall and females are 2 inches shorter. They weight approx. 25- 30kg. 

5) Indian Pariah – It’s an ancient autochthonous landrace. You can found them easily all over India, Bangladesh and even beyond in South Asia. It’s known as with the name of “desi dog.” They are available in different colors including browns, ranging from dark to reddish-brown, with or without white markings. Solid black Indian Pariah dogs are rare, but you can find pied one.
